The importance of tags
Last week, I was lucky enough to have 4 out of 5 days off school thanks to snow, which gave me plenty of time to sleep and get working on a new affiliate lens. After finding that I couldn’t sign up to the Pepperjam Network I’m not part of a company, I decided to sign up to Commision Junction. Compared to Clickbank, it is very comprehensive (which I like) and the variety of programs is greater. I made a lens about improving your grammar, spelling and style of writing with an excellent tool called WhiteSmoke.
After setting up the lens (and finally managing to log in to SquidU with my new account, MyNameIsBen), I set about looking for information on how to make my lens better. One thing that concerned me was where to put the ‘Buy’ button. I think it’s important that the modules are in the write order so that the buyer is given to the option to buy at exactly the write time. So I decided to post on SquidU in the ‘Critique Me‘ section and ask for advice on this, and on how to improve my lens in general – the help I got was extremely helpful, useful and practical meaning I could optimize my lens.
I now have the challenge of getting the lens to Google. One way I am hoping to do this, and increase the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) of the lens is with tags. Tags are an excellent way to get links to and from your lens. If you use the correct tags, it can give you a boost up the rankings in search engines and can get you more traffic.
The ‘Discovery Tool’ (found in the introduction module) relies on your tags. You can select up to 3 lenses that you want the ‘Discovery Tool’ to use, but the rest are automatically determined based on what tags you have (and possibly Lensrolled lenses, but I’m not sure). If you use good tags, related lenes with titles that are keywords will appear in the Discovery Tool. This is very good because Google looks at what out-links you have from your page as well as what links you have to your lens. It is another factor that Google considers when calculating your rank in Google.
Hopefully, my lens will index with Google soon and I can tell you if my work has payed off yet!

A Change of Plan
Squidoo appears to be down, or not fully functioning at the moment so I thought this would be a good time to make a post.
he traffic continues to roll in for my Russell Brand lens. However, I have not properly made use of this. I want to optimize that lens to suit the people that visit it. They visit it for a particular purpose, and I hope to serve that purpose and possibly even make a small amount of cash from it. Many are looking for shirts, but people aren’t buying what they see. I think this might be down to the lack of style of the design that my lens advertises. If I cannot find a good design, I might have to resort to making one myself. That should be interesting
In other news, I have made a slight change of plan. As well as trying to get as much traffic as possible to my affiliate lens, Fix your PC at home, I think I should start trying to make more high quality lens’s and make myself more known to the rest of the Squidoo community. A good start will be at the SquidU.com forum.

A nice little accident
I haven’t been able to do a lot of work on Squidoo lately because I’ve got quite a lot to do – coursework, graphics work I want to do etc etc. Being a teenager is harder than you remember it to be, trust me.
Because of this, I haven’t spent much time working on Squidoo. I have, however, been checking my stats. I noticed that my Russell Brand lens has received a decent, steady amount of traffic (for me anyway). After looking at the stats, I realised that about two thirds of this traffic was all from Google searches which went along the lines of ‘Russell Brand T-Shirts’. It turns out that when you Google for this term, my lens pops up right at the top. Bingo! I seem to have accidentally made my lens into a bit of a niche lens. When I can find some time, I hope to be expanding on this and trying to make a bit of profit from it.
In other news, I think I’m going to focus on building good traffic for my lens, Repair your PC at home. It’s my first affiliate lens, and I want to see if I can make my first sale

Repair your PC at home, and I need to learn how to promote
I have just completed my lens on repairing your PC at home. This is my first full affiliate lens, and I think I’ve done a pretty good job. It looks interesting, all content is relevant, and all of the content should sell the product *hopefully*. My only fear at the moment is promotion. I have no idea on how to get traffic from people who really want to repair their PC from home.
I had originally called the lens ‘RegistryFix – Repair your PC’ or something along those lines. Basically, it wasn’t a very good title and it wasn’t very niche. I’ve tried to make it more niche by calling it ‘Repair your PC at home!‘. With the current economic downturn, I think this will become a popular theme because nobody will want to shed lots of money on repairing their PC.
I have been through several Squidoo lens’s that are all about promoting lens’s. I’m not completely satisfied. There are links scattered here and there with tools to help you promote your lens’s, but I was thinking to myself that I would really like a list of links to tools. I think this is a perfect idea for my next lens.
